With track conditions drying up however, in final qualifying on Day 2, Alex and his team eventually qualified 7th outright, using the strategy of using race tyres in Qualifying to prepare the bike for the long 24 hour race.
Alex and his two team mates then fought their way back into the race, moving up to 5th position by the 12 hour mark.
It was a nail biting battle between the two Cudlin brothers right to the very end, with both teams pushing themselves and their bikes all the way to the chequered flag, with the younger brother, Alex, taking 2nd place on the podium, and the elder brother Damian taking 3rd place.
This was a record moment for the Cudlin brothers, who are the first brothers ever to have shared the podium in the same Superbike Class at the Le Mans 24 Hour.
"What can I say, other then it was a beautiful race. We showed our "never give up" attitude and our spirit by coming back each time from the issues that we were faced with. It's an amazing feeling claiming the team's first ever EWC podium. We are a privateer team and we are competing against full factory teams. Our total team budget is tiny compared to the factory outfits and we showed we can fight them in these long races. I think for me that's the most special part of this result. It was also extremely nice to share the podium with my brother Damian. We spent the entire race fighting with each other on track, so it was nice for us both to be rewarded with good results at the end.
Making the record books with my brother is even nicer" commented Alex.
"My team was fantastic in this race and proved just how good they are. I said at the start of the season I wanted to fight for podiums and take some factory scalps along the way and we have done it at the very first race. As a team we can only get stronger from here".
"To finish 5th at Portimao is a good job for our team.
We must be realistic. We are a privateer team facing the challenge of factory teams. Our goal was top 5 and we achieved that.
Since finishing in that place, we have now moved into the lead of the World Championship. This is something special for our little team and hopefully it has showed just what we are capable of.
Our next challenge will be Suzuka japan. The goal there will be just to finish in the points. Then we will see where we are sitting in the championship race.
I'm proud of the result and it's due to the faultless riding of my team mates and I and the great mechanics we have.
During the race we had a fuel pump issue which ment we had to pit to change the tank. We lost 3 minutes in that change which was 2 laps.
Hopefully in Suzuka we don't have these issues and we can continue our charge at the front of the championship."
This extraordinary race has turned the FIM EWC championship standings upside down, which is good for the race, good for motorsports. A private team leads the standing.
The next challenge to face for Alex Cudlin will be next FIM EWC championship round scheduled for 31 July: the legendary Suzuka 8 Hours in Japan...let's wish that the Suzuki #50 privateers will make it all happen again !
